After countless medical appointments and tests, the source of my lower right abdominal pain remained a mystery. This pain not only affected my daily life, but also hindered my ability to work at my active job. And in the midst of it all, the stress and fear of the ongoing pandemic only intensified my anxiety.
But then, a glimmer of hope emerged. I turned to the Bible for guidance, combining my years of Bible study with my expertise in wellness and personal training.

I’ve been in the fitness industry for over twelve years as a Certified Personal Trainer, among other things. After teaching the same popular dance cardio class in the same place for all that time, I was beyond burned out. But I loved the community of lifelong friendships that had developed, and I loved leading the devotional and prayer time after class, so I was struggling to let it go.
The ladies wanted to continue, but I was ready to be done. Thankfully, one morning during our coffee and Jesus time, my husband spoke into the situation.
“Monica, you’ve been leading these ladies not just physically, but also spiritually. I hate to see you just abandon that. Can’t you hang in there a little longer and give God some time to work?”
I was grateful for his wisdom. At the same time, I knew the women in my class (and I) had been aging (darn it all!) and needed some more effective ways to care for our bodies than the bouncy, fast paced dancing we had been doing.
Meanwhile, I had been delving into other forms of exercise and I knew anything I decided to undertake needed to have seven components: Scripture meditation, postural alignment, deep breathing, strength training, fascia release, cognitive training, and stretching.
Everything I got excited about and studied always seemed amazing up front. But all lacked more than one of the seven components, and many contained a spiritual component and I quickly realized “spiritual” did not mean Biblical.
As a Christ follower, I felt a check in my spirit regarding participating in those areas, so I avoided them. But the physical benefits I was experiencing were significant.
I realigned a wayward knee. I found new freedom in my feet and no longer needed orthotics. My circulation was much better overall. The ulner nerve issue I suffered from in my left hand was all but gone. My digestion and elimination regulated. Unexplained pain in my lower abdomen was healed. I was breaking up huge chunks of scar tissue in my abdominal area. I was waking up without stiffness and soreness. I was creating muscle tone and endurance, while increasing grace, strength, and flexibility in my movements.
One day as I pondered the situation, I felt the Lord move in my spirit. He said, “Monica, why don’t you come to the One who created your body and your mind for help? Let Me show you how to connect the two and let’s grow your faith and our love relationship in the process.”
The Lord began to reveal Bible verses to me as I was working on my physical body. The spiritual connections were stunning and my heart would sing with joy in those moments.
I decided to gather the core group of ladies and lay my heart out. We met at a local Christian coffee shop and while we sipped lattes, I told them I was burned out on dance cardio, but not on them and not on our spiritual journey. I told them a little about what I was learning, and the frustration of not being able to find the class that covered it all.
And I’ll never forget what happened next.
One of the girls looked at me and said, “Well, start your own class! You can make it whatever you want it to be.”
My eyes got a little wide as I looked around the circle of dear faces. I saw nodding, encouragement, and support.
“Wait,” I said, “you’re saying you’d be open to something drastically different from dance cardio?”
Emphatic “yeses” and nodding ensued all around.
And so it began. I praised the Lord in the car on my way home, already beginning to play with the structure of the class in my mind.
The result is The Still Workout™. Months of developing, asking questions, listening to needs and helpful suggestions, and praying for guidance led to this amazing practice.
I’m so grateful you’re here and hope you’ll find much value in promoting physical and spiritual well-being in your body and soul to better serve the Lord and grow in relationship with Him.
